A Data First Approach to System Design
We all know how valuable data is, and lately, it's become even more valuable in the hands of Data Analysts and Data Scientists outside of your applications. The question is, how can we enable our data teams without sacrificing performance and scalability among many other things?

Think Inclusion; Not Diversity: An Interactive Brain Splatter Session on Making San Diego Tech Succeed in Toto
"Diversity is being invited to the Party; Inclusion is Being Asked to Dance" - Vernã Myers, Esq.,

Diversity is used in almost every conversation regarding tech; not enough women, not enough people of color, not enough of something else. Yet being invited not always means you have a voice at the table. Inclusion is a more powerful word that encapsulates that if you make everyone welcome, you will attract everyone, and they in turn can add more to the conversation.

In this interactive session, we will be writing on the walls, literally; thoughts, ideas, goals, solutions, and a wishlist of what can be. We will have several moderators who will be reading questions from the audience as well as some questions sent in prior to the event. This is an INCLUSIVE event - to truly create an Inclusion Manifesto at the end of the evening, we need all voices. We need your voice. Men and Women. After the session, we will be scribing all the words and phrases into a report on how to make inclusion as common a word at a startup as craft brew and ping pong. What you'll need: an open mind, Sharpies, and a willingness to learn and teach.

Big Data Resources For Biotech
Over the last five years, technological advances have dramatically reduced the cost and increased the throughput of DNA sequencing, resulting in the generation of vast amounts of sequence data that must be stored and analyzed to support research in human medicine, microbiomics, plant genomics, bioengineered organisms and compounds, and other areas.

Nowhere has this sea change been more evident than in San Diego’s major life sciences cluster, centered on the Torrey Pines Mesa and surrounds. As a national leader in high-performance computing and storage, the San Diego Supercomputer Center has been sought out for its infrastructure and expertise in storing and analyzing genomic and ancillary data for life sciences research.

This talk will introduce the local biotech startup community to the high-performance computing, storage, and big data resources available from SDSC. Topics to be covered will include systems, software, and data management. The workshop will discuss user support, expertise, and training available from SDSC researchers and staff. The various means for gaining access to the systems and expertise, such as research collaborations and service agreements, will also be covered.

About SDSC:  As an Organized Research Unit of UC San Diego, The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is considered a leader in data-intensive computing and cyberinfrastructure, providing resources, services, and expertise to the national research community including industry and academia.

Technology Development at the Intersection of the Genome and Computer Science
This event will focus on the intersection of Computer Science, Genomics and Personalized Medicine. As genomic sequencing is becoming more affordable to the masses it will continue to create new industries and revolutionize current ones. The data that is produced from a single genome is astronomical and is only useful if you are able to analyze the data. If personalized medicine is going to become a reality there will need to be a large number of life scientist and computer scientists working in collaboration to make this possible. Join our panel of technologists for an inspiring discussion about employer-led apprenticeship programs and how they allow companies to take a two-pronged approach to hiring: continuing recruiting highly skilled people while also growing high-potential people into skilled employees.

In today's hiring market, a failure to invest in growing skills in-house will result in decreased retention, decreased productivity, and higher expenses. Learn how to effectively implement an apprenticeship program and what it takes to maintain one for optimal company success.

From Software Engineer to CTO
From Commodore 64 to the Cloud, programming has been my passion. I started as an engineer, climbed my way to the top, and have now expanded my team and product dramatically. This was accomplished not only through hard work, but a systematic approach to growth. I have used this model to excel not only my career, but those working with me through a collaborative, innovative, and culture driven climate at MindTouch.

This talk will share how I found my footing as CTO and shaped engineering at MindTouch. My hope is to help and inspire fellow entrepreneurs on their startup journey by delivering actionable insights to self and team expansion.
