Think Inclusion; Not Diversity: An Interactive Brain Splatter Session on Making San Diego Tech Succeed in Toto
"Diversity is being invited to the Party; Inclusion is Being Asked to Dance" - Vernã Myers, Esq.,

Diversity is used in almost every conversation regarding tech; not enough women, not enough people of color, not enough of something else. Yet being invited not always means you have a voice at the table. Inclusion is a more powerful word that encapsulates that if you make everyone welcome, you will attract everyone, and they in turn can add more to the conversation.

In this interactive session, we will be writing on the walls, literally; thoughts, ideas, goals, solutions, and a wishlist of what can be. We will have several moderators who will be reading questions from the audience as well as some questions sent in prior to the event. This is an INCLUSIVE event - to truly create an Inclusion Manifesto at the end of the evening, we need all voices. We need your voice. Men and Women. After the session, we will be scribing all the words and phrases into a report on how to make inclusion as common a word at a startup as craft brew and ping pong. What you'll need: an open mind, Sharpies, and a willingness to learn and teach.

Startup Partner Opportunities with Federal Laboratories – “Be the Next Tony Stark”
1:00 - 2:30 PM

Moderator: Dr. Bill Hogan, Executive Director, iDEA Hub
Mr. Martin Machniak, S&T Manager, SSC-Pacific
Mr. Cameron Bruce, NAWCWD China Lake
Ms. Janeya Griffin, NASA Armstrong FRC
Dr. Martin Kleckner, TriTech SBDC
Questions and Open Discussions

Businesses across the country have successfully leveraged research, IP, and partnerships with our nation’s federal labs to commercial market.

California is home to a variety of military and government research labs that are constantly developing cutting edge science to meet their mission. These labs all operate under a federal mandate to support tech transfer. The purpose of this panel is to discuss the diverse technologies that are developed at NASA Armstrong, NAWCWD, and SSC-Pacific along with some of the tools for that you may be able to use leverage their IP for your business.

A recent SSC Pacific startup success happened here in San Diego - the company formed in 2006 around technologies licensed from the lab, and was acquired by a Fortune 500 company in November 2014 for $85M. SSC Pacific also participated in the San Diego Furnace Program, which saw seven teams form around SSC Pacific technologies and graduate from a six-month technology accelerator in December 2015.

Federal Lab Overview

SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) located in Point Loma is the U.S. Navy's research, development, test, and evaluation laboratory and fleet support center for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, also known as C4ISR. SSC Pacific's mission is to lead the Navy from concept to capability through research, development, delivery, and support of integrated C4ISR, cyber, and space systems across all warfighting domains.

The Armstrong Flight Research Center is NASA's primary center for atmospheric flight research and operations. NASA Armstrong is chartered to research and test advanced aeronautics, space and related technologies that are critical to carrying out the Agency's missions of space exploration, space operations, scientific discovery, and aeronautical research and development. For almost 70 years, research at NASA Armstrong has led to major advancements and breakthroughs in the design and capabilities of many state-of-the-art civil and military aircraft. Here, we demonstrate America's leadership in aeronautics, Earth and space science, and aerospace technology as we seek to revolutionize aviation, add to mankind's knowledge of the universe, and contribute to our understand and protection of Earth.

Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division

The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) is an organization within the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) dedicated to maintaining a center of excellence in weapons development for the Department of the Navy (DoN). NAWCWD has two locations in sunny Southern California; China Lake hosting the land test range, and Point Mugu hosting the sea test range.

This session is part of the 6th Annual Multi-Purpose Technology Symposium.  For additional information on the full-day symposium, please visit the event webpage here.
