In this highly interactive session, you'll learn a proven 4-step process to validate your big idea. We'll show you how to quickly identify key users and their needs, create a prototype (without any coding!), and get real feedback from users. Should you love your idea or decide to kill it? Join us so you can find out.
Note: You absolutely do not have to come with an idea in mind. You'll learn a process to validate any idea.
Jeremiah Gardner presents a compelling talk on startups getting started. The session will explore validating an idea, learning fast, pivoting, recognizing the good from the bad and the great from the good. You’ll leave the session with a deeper understanding of how to generate bold ideas, how to be more customer-centric in your work, and how to (in)validate ideas early to eliminate unnecessary waste.
What are three key takeaways the audience will get from this session?
A practical understanding of new tools and techniques for early phase startups
How to (in)validate ideas early through experimentation
Bridging the gap between entrepreneurs and investors- how to get on the same page and speak the same language.
Often, there exists a misalignment between investors and entrepreneurs. This session will focus how to bridge that gap. Starting with teaching entrepreneur’s ‘how to speak investor'- i.e. going over the definitions of some commonly misunderstood investor terms, then focusing on why selecting the right Lead Investor is important, and ending with a focus on aligning entrepreneur’s expectations with the realities of Angel Investing.
This is a practical and interactive talk that lays out a simple process to turn your idea into solid features, user flows, interfaces, and functionality for an app.
We’ve all have heard of it but... What is 3D printing really about? We’ll be discussing how it all began, its possibilities, different types of technologies and what the near future looks like, all of this in terms we can all understand.

Businesses across the country have successfully leveraged research, IP, and partnerships with our nation’s federal labs to commercial market.
California is home to a variety of military and government research labs that are constantly developing cutting edge science to meet their mission. These labs all operate under a federal mandate to support tech transfer. The purpose of this panel is to discuss the diverse technologies that are developed at NASA Armstrong, NAWCWD, and SSC-Pacific along with some of the tools for that you may be able to use leverage their IP for your business.
A recent SSC Pacific startup success happened here in San Diego - the company formed in 2006 around technologies licensed from the lab, and was acquired by a Fortune 500 company in November 2014 for $85M. SSC Pacific also participated in the San Diego Furnace Program, which saw seven teams form around SSC Pacific technologies and graduate from a six-month technology accelerator in December 2015.

Our Awesome Sponsor:In 2016 women are starting businesses at double the rate of men. According to Forbes, more than 30% of privately-held businesses in America are run by women, and in the last decade the number of all women-owned firms has grown by 28.6% – compared to a 24.4% increase for all U.S. businesses. The sad news is women still get less than 4% of VC funding. Meet a tech exec, a bio-startup and an investor that will tell StartUpWeek why we are still facing this and what can be done about it.

Patents are often the key to the foundation, growth, and ultimate survival of a company. The ability to raise funding turns not only on the creativity of the technology, but also, how well it is protected by creating a barrier to entry by competitors. Without such protection, investors are typically reluctant to finance the company. Consequently, establishing an effective patent portfolio around the company’s innovations is key.
